Training camp is a time when all the future racers come together in Gainesville, Georgia. It’s a week of going through different scenarios to prepare for the World Race and learning more about what life on the field entails. It’s a week filled with lots of learning, prayer, and getting to know each other.

About a week before training camp I developed a pretty nasty cough. At first I didn’t think much of it, but after a few days it didn’t go away. My parents urged me to see a doctor before training camp in case I was sick, so I begrudgingly made an appointment.

The day before training camp I drove to the doctors office to get my cough checked out. After the doctor looked at my medical history and asked me a few questions she told me that my cough is just a side effect of my allergies this year. She then prescribed me an inhaler to help alleviate my cough.

I think the timing of getting an inhaler right before training camp is ironic because training camp resembled an inhaler.

An inhaler is used to breathe medicine directly into someone’s lungs. In my experience, using my inhaler was refreshing, but at the same time makes me cough a tad more at first because it stirs up the mucus in my lungs.

Training camp was refreshing because I was reassured that the World Race is where I need to be and made me super excited for the next year. At the same time, it was uncomfortable because training camp was pumping in a lot of goodness, but naturally that stirred up some of the bad stuff. I was learning so much about my faith, but that knowledge comes hand in hand with challenging questions.

Training camp, like my inhaler, was something I was unaware that I needed in order to get better. After using my inhaler for a week my cough got significantly better. Just like after being at training camp my relationship with Christ was significantly stronger.

To sum it up, training camp was the refreshing breath of fresh air I needed before leaving for the World Race.

It was a spiritual inhaler.

Stay tuned for a more in depth analysis of training camp— I‘m currently editing my vlog!
